Psychological and Educational Assessment

Psychological assessments may be required for a number of reasons including:

  • underachievement at school or university
  • memory or attentional problems
  • problems maintaining employment or managing job related activities
  • problems with reading, spelling or writing
  • exploring suitable career directions and study options

Learning difficulties can often result in underachievement at school or university or difficulties with job related activities. A variety of disorders can affect a person's ability to develop literacy and numeracy skills and these disorders are commonly referred to as 'specific learning disabilities'. Learning disabilites are characterised by a combination of difficulties with reading, spelling, written expression, oral language or maths concepts. The term 'dyslexia' refers to a type of learning disability which is essentially a reading disability restriciting the ability to develop age appropriate reading fluency and comprehension and spelling skills.

Learning disabilities are often first detected when a person has an unexpectedly low academic achievement when compared to his/her general intelligence level and level of effort. To be able to demonstrate their true knowledge in relation to study courses, they may need study accommodations such as extra time in exams or the use of assistive technology for exams and assignment tasks. Following an assessment, recommendations can be made for learning strategies and study supports in line with an individual's strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations may also be made regarding resolving work related difficulties.

What does a psychological assessment involve?

  • an initial structured interview
  • administration of psychometric tests, usually over two sessions
  • the writing of an extensive report which will include: assessment results, recommendations for learning strategies in line with individual strengths and weaknesses, recommendations for appropriate supports for both study and work enviroment
  • a feedback session providing consultation and advice
